After Vancouver...

After his final performance at the Olympic exhibition and enjoying the closing ceremony, Stéphane will return to Switzerland on March 1, together with the other Swiss athletes. They will arrive in Zurich early morning of March 2 and together with Sarah and the rest of the Art on Ice cast they will start rehearsing for the shows the very same day. Art on Ice is premiering on March 4; there will be six shows in Zurich and two in Lausanne.

On March 11, Stéphane will fly to the US, where he will compete with Shizuka Arakawa in ABC’s Thin Ice, a pro competition for which twelve skaters are paired up and skate against each other. The couples will be judged by former figure skaters but also by the audience. The show will be aired March 19 and 21st.

At the end of March, Stéphane will skate in St. Petersburg (March 30) and Moscow (March 31). From there he will go straight to Stockholm for the second show of World’s Best on Ice (April 2). This is the start of a long list of shows in which Stéphane is going to participate, mainly in Germany, Eastern Europe and Asia. Please check his schedule as all shows will be added over the next few days and weeks.

Stéphane will not participate in the World Championships in Turin.

OLYMPICS: The hardest game of all

It was a long and hard battle…but eventually Stéphane didn't quite reach the podium… for only 0.51 points.

He struggled again with the quad toeloop right at the beginning of the programme. It should have been in a combination but Stéphane was not able to add the second jump. The next jump, the triple Lutz was shaky. He combined the second quad with a toeloop, but only a double one. He had to fight through every jump and it affected his whole performance. He was tense, unable to loosen up, it wasn’t the Stéphane we are used to and were expecting, and neither was it what he had hoped to show. It has been a big disappointment for him…

Stéphane placed third in the free programme (162.09) but the difference in points with Daisuke Takahashi (156.98) in the short programme was too big to make up: the Japanese skater who gave a wonderful performance despite a fall on the quad beat Stéphane by 0.51 points overall.

The winner of the Olympic gold medal is Evan Lysacek (167.37) who gave a good and clean performance although a lot less energetic than the short one.

To the surprise of many, Evgeni Plushenko (165.51) placed only second. Despite a quad-triple toeloop combination, he couldn’t hold on to his title due to some flaws in the jumps. Lysacek and Plushenko received the same component score, but Lysacek eventually beat Plushenko in the technical score.

A small consolation is the fact that they were rightfully beaten in the component score by both Daisuke Takahashi (84.50) and Stéphane (83.60).

OLYMPICS: Standing ovation for Mr. Tell!

It wasn’t flawless but nevertheless, Stéphane blew everyone away again with his masterpiece of short program.

He had a bit of trouble landing the quad toeloop and could only add a double toeloop. The double axel and the triple flip were perfect and so were the rest of the elements and the performance.

He received a technical score of 41.48 points and a component score of 43.15 points, which was again the highest of all men. For Choreography, Team Lambiel received a fantastic 9.15 points.

He’s currently in fifth place. The following skaters are in front of him but nowhere out of reach:

Evgeni Plushenko 90.85 (51.10 + 39.75)
Evan Lysacek 90.30 (48.30 + 42.00)
Daisuke Takahashi 90.25 (48.90 + 41.35)
Nobunari Oda 84.85 (46.00 + 38.85)

OLYMPICS: Men's Short Program Tonight!

After having done a great job carrying the Swiss Flag on Friday night, things get serious for Stéphane from tonight. William Tell will be performing later today, as the 19th skater to enter the ice. For those of us who aren't in Vancouver and who don't wish to stay up ALL night, Stéphane's warm-up is scheduled at 2.30 am (GMT) and his short skate at 2.57 am (GMT). We trust Stéphane will do his best and hope he enjoys competing at the Pacific Coliseum… For results, click HERE.

Last night, the pairs presented their free programme: Anaïs and Antoine, who were competing for the very first time in Olympics, finished in a good 15th place! Congratulations to them both and let's hope they are enjoying their time in Vancouver.

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES 2010 - VANCOUVER

IT'S TIME TO TALK OLYMPICS!

First of all we are very happy to announce that Stéphane will be bearing the Swiss flag at the Opening Ceremony, tomorrow Friday.

“It is a very nice surprise to have been chosen as flag bearer and I will be bearing it proudly”, Stéphane says. “The Swiss flag for me represents team spirit, on one hand of the whole Swiss delegation and on the other of all the people who made it possible for me to be here. Best of luck to all of us and a lot of success at these Winter Olympics.”

The Ceremony starts at 6pm Vancouver time (GMT -8); the Swiss athletes will march in very late. So the Europeans among us will need a few litres of coffee to make it through but it’s a great practice for the figures skating competitions as they all take place in the middle of the night.

Stéphane’s competitions schedule, specifically, looks as follows:

Short program: 16th February, 4.15pm local time
Free program: 18th February, 5pm local time

Both his short program and his free skate highlight his extraordinary artistic talent and his outstanding technical abilities. The wonderful reactions Stéphane received from the audience and the judges at the European Championships in Tallinn have been very encouraging. He received the highest PCS in the men's competition, which reflects how much more he has developed as a skater and as an artist over the last four years. At the same time, his programs feature intricate steps and spins, as well as ambitious jump contents – in Estonia, he was the only skater to land two quadruple jumps in the free program. He has been working hard over the past few weeks, and he has now arrived fully prepared in Vancouver where he hopes to mesmerise everyone with two passionate and flawless programs. Go for it Stéph!

Europeans Championships 2010 – Outcome and Conclusion

The second part of the week was very exciting in Tallinn. Thursday night, Stéphane was the last competitor to appear on the ice and skated for the first time to the music of La Traviata, his new free programme. This one for the least charmed the audience and the judges: besides a unique choreography, rousing footwork and spins as impressive as ever, Stéphane showed two quads, one of which in a quadruple-double combination, a triple flip-triple toeloop combination, 4 other triple jumps as well as a double axel. The audience remained under the spell of this classical waltz, thanks to Stéphane's enthusiastic and sensitive performance. In spite of a few minor mistakes and a quick fall in his steps sequence, Stéphane got awarded a score of 160.79 points which placed him second of the free skate. Overall, he gained 3 places and earned himself the SILVER MEDAL with a total of 238.54 points! Evgeni Plushenko (255.39 pts) won the competition and Brian Joubert (236.45 pts) completed this European podium.

Congratulations to Stéphane for this 3rd title as European silver medallist!

In the ladies, Sarah Meier came back from her 8th place after the short programme to a nice 5th rank: with her 157.44 points, she insured her spot in Vancouver's Winter Olympics. As for ice dance, Ramona Elsener and Florian Roost ranked 25th.

European Championships 2010 - Short Program

Stéphane is 5th after the short program. He started off very well with a double axel but only barely could prevent a fall on the quadruple toe-loop and he was unable to add the triple toe-loop. The landing of the triple flip wasn’t flawless either but nevertheless the crowd went wild during the second part of his program and he amazed everyone with his steps and spins.

Stéphane received a score of 77.75 points and together with Brian Joubert (2nd) the highest PCS. The Russian Evgeni Plushenko is currently in the lead. You can find all results HERE.

Tonight at around 22.45 local time (GMT +2) Stéphane will present his new long program to Verdi’s “La Traviata”.

At this opportunity we would like to congratulate Anaïs Morand and Antoine Dorsaz to their 8th place. The couple gained three places in the pairs’ long program and thus secured their participation in the Olympic Games. Félicitations!

European Championships 2010, Tallinn

Stéphane arrived on Sunday in Tallinn, Estonia, for the European Championships 2010. The short program will take place on Wednesday from 11 am (GMT+2). On Thursday, at the occasion of the long program, Stéphane will present for the very first time his new program to “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi. The detailed schedule as well as the results can be found on the ISU page of the event.

Lugano - Basel - Milano

Last weekend, Stéphane won the Swiss Championships for the 9th time in his career. He received a score of 83.91 points for his short program. Due to a shaky landing on the quad toeloop he was only able to add a single toeloop. Nevertheless he delighted the whole audience with his Tell all over again.
In the free program he had some problems again with his quad toeloop and was unable to add the second jump. Stéphane was cautious with the jumps in his Tango but was convincing as always. He received 160.32 points and therefore had a total of 244.23 points.

Everyone who didn’t have the chance to watch Stéphane in Lugano, will have another two oppurtunities this year: either at the Eisgala Basel on December 19, or at the Ice Christmas Gala in Milano on December 20. See you all there!
